You may have noticed that the price of food at your grocery store has been creeping up and up. Not only has the price per item been increasing, but in some cases the package size has been decreasing. With being hit on both sides, you may be thinking it's harder to eat healthy with the shrinking dollar. Well, think again. There still are a few foods that you can get for under a buck.
1) Spinach. Spinach is chock-full of vitamins, and even more dense in antioxidants. Look for fresh spinach in the keep fresh bags when grocery stores run have a $1 a bag special. Since manufacturers now flash freeze vegetables to preserve their nutrients, frozen spinach can be just as healthy as fresh. And frozen spinach is often less expensive than fresh.
2) Blueberries. While the price varies during different times of the year and with climate changes, a pint of blueberries can be purchased for $1 during certain times of the year. Blueberries have virtual no fat and are low in calories. Yet, they contain both vitamin C and fiber, both of which add to a healthy diet.
3) Whole Grain Pasta. Adding vegetables and lean chicken to whole grain pasta makes for a satisfying, filling, and healthy meal. Whole grain pasta is often available for less than $1 a box.
4) Lentils. Lentils are a type of bean, which is incredibly healthy. It contains a ton of fiber, folate, iron, magnesium, and protein. which You can purchase a bag full on dried lentils on the cheap.
5) Yogurt. Individual yogurt containers cost less than one dollar, and when you buy the larger yogurt container, you get even more value. Yogurt not only contains protein and vitamin D, but it contains probiotics, which is helpful to your digestive system.
