There's no better way of showing your significant other how much you care about them other than wanting them to be healthy to spend seemingly endless time together in each of your golden years. While champagne and oysters may be a Valentine's Day food and beverage love fest, so too are red wine and dark chocolate. However, the difference is the latter pair can actually be good for you.
And since we are talking about matters of the heart, both red wine and dark chocolate have positive aspects that are actually good for the ticker.
Both red wine and 70-percent cocoa-laden dark chocolate contain resveratrol. One of the benefits of resveratrol is that it believed to lower blood sugar. Lower blood sugar means lower blood sugar, which means less of a diabetes risk. Since diabetes can lead to heart disease, reservatrol is good for the heart.
February is the month of the heart in at least two ways: Valentine's Day occurs in February, but February is also national heart month. It's a month that we are to raise awareness of the importance of keeping our hearts healthy and avoiding heart disease.
So this Valentine's day, when you plan on indulging with your significant other, think about adding red wine to your special dinner. Merlots, Pinots, Shirahs are all lovely red wines that contain resveratrol. Not only that but red wine contains antioxidants, which increase your good cholesterol while protecting your arteries against damage. And when you want to dip your your chocolate covered strawberries, make them dark-chocolate covered strawberries.
Remember though that red wine should be consumed only in moderation.
