Millions of Americans will be traveling during the holiday season, spending countless hours on the road, on a plane, or in an airport. Rest stops, gas stations, and airports are adorn with lures of unhealthy foods from super-sized fries to Big Gulps. But rest assured, you can make healthy choices while driving or flying to your holiday destination.
Healthy Options at Fast Food Restaurants
Fast food restaurants have their share of burgers and fries, but some also have healthier food options. Instead of choosing the double burger, salt and grease-laden french fries and thick chocolate shake, choose a salad, yogurt parfait, or grilled chicken. Avoid added extras, such as mayo and cheese and stay away from items that say "fried" or "breaded".
Energy Snacks
Energy bars and trail mix offer healthier ways to keep your energy up while traveling. As is often the case, energy bars contain a good amount of fiber and protein, which helps keep you full longer and stave off hunger. What's more, trail mix are often loaded with nuts, which contain healthy protein.
Snacks from Home
Packing snacks from home may be your best option. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich made out of natural peanut butter on whole grain bread is a much better alternative than a burger or pizza. Low-fat string cheese, fruit, and nuts make great snacks to keep you feeling energized while on the road. Even small portions of dark chocolate can give you an added caffeine boost. Be sure to drink enough water too. Dehydration can make you feel tired, and you sure don't want to arrive at your holiday destination feeling fatigued.
