Walmart is embarking on a multi-year campaign to promote healthier eating habits and promote childhood obesity.
One of the most visible ways they will be doing so is through nutrition food labeling. The retailer will be placing green "Great For You" labels on foods, that are in fact good for you. The signs will also be around the fruits and vegetables section of the store.
In order to receive the Great For You stamp of approval, the food must meet specific requirements. Of course, fruits and vegetables make the grade, as do most lean cuts of meat. While white rice doesn't get the stamp, brown rice does. Two percent and whole milk fail to qualify, but skim and one percent will earn the label. Even though eggs can be high in cholesterol, they receive the stamp for being a low cost high protein source.
To begin, the Great For You stamp will be on fruits and vegetables and on the good foods in Walmart's own Great Value brand. In time, name brands may also win the seal of approval. As such, Walmart has been making their own brand products healthier by cutting things like sodium in their ketchup, canned goods, and offering low-sodium lunch meat.
Foods that contain too much fat, too much sugar, or too many artificial preservatives won't get the seal.
First lady Michelle Obama is support Walmart's efforts, and sees the new seal as a way for parents to have more information to make healthier choices for their families as well as a weapon in fighting childhood obesity.
